Course Description:

Study of major world regions with emphasis on prevailing conditions and developments, including emerging conditions and trends, and the awareness of diversity of ideas and practices found in those regions. Course content may include one or more regions.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Define and explain the geographic concept of “region.”
  2. Locate significant geographic features of regions of the world and describe their cultural, economic, political, and physical characteristics.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of each region’s role in a globalizing world.
  4. Apply geographic concepts to understanding current events, conflicts, and issues in a regional context.
  5. Use concepts of geography to explain population and culture, political and economic systems, migration, diffusion and prosperity, in relation to environments and resources.
  6. Correctly employ language that demonstrates an understanding of the course material and its significance.
  7. Use statistics to grasp and express the relation of resources, demographics, production, and consumption to the relative success of peoples throughout various regions.
  8. Assess how regions, nations, and peoples use resources to promote or deny opportunity.
  9. Observe how cultural practices relate to landscapes and the environment.
  10. Investigate the positive and negative results of globalization.

  • The course textbook is available at TJC’s bookstore in Rogers Student Center. Additional copies are available at College Books, 1232 East 5th St. at Baxter Ave., next to campus.

Technology Requirements:

You will need to have access to a reliable Internet connections in order to submit assignments via Canvas.

Additional Materials and Supplies Required:

There are four exams in this course, and you will need one Scantron per exam (for a total of four Scanton sheets for the semester). You will also need to bring a No. 2 pencil to all exams.

Methods of Evaluation:

  • Exams:
  • Exam 1 = 100 points
  • Exam 2 = 100 points
  • Exam 3 = 100 points
  • Exam 4 (Final Exam) = 100 points
  • Assignment:
  • Report Proposal (ex cred) = 5 points
  • Report Update (ex cred) = 15 points
  • Final Report = 100 points
  • Course Point Total (excluding extra credit) = 500 points


Expected Classroom Etiquette for Tyler Junior College
