COMM 1307 Student Learning Outcomes Essay

Student Assignment

1.  You may use the Vaughn Library or any other reputable online sources as you conduct your research for facts when completing this assignment.

2.  Take the fake news quiz from https://forms.gle/XGLqrqkNgfDyRqp66 (Links to an external site.) Keep a record of your quiz score which will show at the end of the quiz.

3.  After taking the quiz, have two people from a different generation than your own (for example: 200-present - Generation Z, 1980-2000 - Millennials, 1965-1979 - Generation Y, 1946-1964 - Baby Boomers) take the same quiz on https://forms.gle/XGLqrqkNgfDyRqp66 (Links to an external site.) Keep a record of their percentages. Compare the three percentages and create a chart with this data.

4.  You will write a two-page essay comparing who is more likely to believe fake news, reference your chart as well as outside sources.  You are to discuss the different reasons for why people are susceptible to believing fake news, including, but not limited to, media literacy and personal bias. Discuss the responsibilities of providing accurate information. You need to provide reputable sources for your claims.

5.  At the end of your essay, you must have a separate paragraph titled Conclusion. Come up with ideas and initiatives as to how to combat fake news.

6.  The final page should be a Reference page. You should have at least four reputable sources. The total assignment should be four-pages in length. (Page 1 should include your introduction and first paragraph. Page 2 should include your discussion paragraphs. Page 3 should include your chart and explanation of your data and your conclusion. Page 4 should be your reference page. )

7. Make sure you double-space the paper, using one-inch margins and a 12-point font. Use APA style for citations. Also, use spell check and grammar check before turning it in.

 

TIPS

DO NOT copy and paste in this paper. Use your own words. If you want to quote a small portion of a source, you may do so, but be sure to reference it correctly.

 

How to Create a Bar Chart

1. You must have Microsoft Word installed on your computer.

2.  Create a New Document, then click on "Insert" (3rd tab from left).

3. Click on "Chart". This will give you several options. Click on "Bar" and use the first chart sample on the left.

4. You will then enter the population data that you gathered on the left side of the excel spreadsheet, along with the numbers that go with each variable.

5. Name your bar chart at the top.

6. You can also use Excel or Google Sheets to create your bar chart.

 

How to Submit an Assignment in Canvas

1.  In order to upload a document, make sure you save your essay document and your bar chart onto your desktop. Your name must be on your document.

2. Click on "Submit Assignment" in order to attach your paper.

3. You will be prompted to "Choose File".

4.  Find your file, click on the button that will transfer your file to Canvas.
