Peer-review process ensures the scholarly nature of a journal's contents. Peer-reviewed articles are sent to and reviewed by fellow scholars within that same field to determine if the article is scholarly and appropriate to that journal.
Publications such as Time, Fortune, and Newsweek are referred to as popular sources and don't include this peer-review process, but rather rely on the judgement of their editors as to the appropriateness of an article. Without the peer-review process, there is no continuity for solid, scholarly content.
