What Is a Call Number?

A call number gives each book in the library a specific "address" in our collection so that you can go directly to your book at the proper shelf location

Books in the TJC library are arranged by the Dewey Decimal Classification System, which uses the 000's to 900's numbering system to identify a subject area. Using the very brief subject list below, you can see that you would find a book on Sociology in the 300's section of the library.

First Floor

  • Circulating and reference books for 000's through 800's are interfiled
  • Most reference books have a three-day checkout period
  • Periodical collection containing magazines, journals and newspapers
  • Fiction section

Second Floor

  • World, U.S. and Texas History book collection (900's)
  • All circulating and reference books are interfiled
  • Legal Collection - in support of TJC's paralegal program
  • Biographies
  • Health Sciences Collection - all nursing and allied health books and journals
